Today kicks off a massive project: cleaning, reorganizing, decluttering… and setting up a brand new bed for my 4-year-old. But this isn’t just a room refresh — it’s a full-blown mission to help him start sleeping in his own room again.

Here’s the thing. We already did this.

At just 3 months old, we moved him from a bassinet in our room to a crib in his own. I even slept in his room on a bed for a while until I felt ready to leave him in there overnight. It worked beautifully. He slept through the night, peacefully and independently.

As he got older, we gently transitioned him out of the crib by taking the railing down. Then we moved him into a twin-size bed with bumpers — and again, he did great. No issues, no drama. It felt like we had nailed this whole sleep thing.

But right around his third birthday, it was like a switch flipped. The midnight wake-ups started. Then the full-night takeovers. And now? He sleeps in our bed. Every. Single. Night.

At one point, we even turned our bed sideways just to make room for all of us. (Thankfully, we’re not very tall people.) But even still, it’s not working for us anymore. We’re squished. We’re tired. And truthfully, he’s ready. At 4 years old, I know it’s time to help him start learning how to separate — just a little — from mom.

He’s even said he wants his own bed again, and I’m holding onto that glimmer of readiness like gold.

So here’s the plan:
Just like before, I’m bringing a mattress into his room. I’ll sleep there for a bit while he adjusts to his new big kid bed. And then, little by little, I’ll start to edge my way out — one night at a time.

Because this isn’t just about where he sleeps. It’s about helping him feel safe and confident on his own. It’s about growth. And yes — it’s about this mama learning to let go, even just a little.

Wish us luck. We’re doing this — again.

Have you gone through a sleep regression or bed-sharing phase with your little one? I’d love to hear what worked (or didn’t!) for your family — drop a comment below and let’s talk about it.

Also, would you be interested in seeing pictures or little video clips of the room transformation and this whole process? I’m thinking of sharing more of that kind of content if it’s something you’d enjoy!
